Advice Needed

All of you seasoned c-sections moms...

It occurred to me recently that I'm not going to be able to lift Caleb for a while after I have this baby (a month, maybe?). He weighs about 26 pounds, and that's definitely over the, "don't lift anything heavier than the baby" requirement.

So, I think we need to move Caleb to a toddler bed. I don't want to, since he's doing fine in his crib, now that we turned it around!, and he's not even 2 yet. He has a convertible crib, where the front comes off and two little pieces are added to each side. I'm not looking forward to the energy it will require those first few nights to make him get back in his bed 1,000 times. And he's not old enough for the "big boy bed" logic.

Any advice? Is there any way to keep him in the crib and not have to lift him? Please offer your suggestions!!

And, everyone else who's ever moved a child to a toddler bed, your advice is welcome as well. We're treading in new waters here.

Jen,

What a great point I hadn't thought of it! I wish I could help here, but since my eldest is three and half we have been out of the crib for 20 months now. The transition to the toddler bed has to be at the right time, we tried when she was 18 months and it was silly because she was definetely not ready! By 2 she was more than happy to go..with some help. Grandpa made her a bed that is shaped like elmo...very cute I must add but it freaked her out, so we started out with naps in the bed, then gradually moved up. It took a while but patience patience patience, mixed with prayer and you can do it!

They told me I couldn't lift anything but baby for the full 6 weeks....I did at three weeks when my help left and let me tell you I regreted ever 31 pounds I lifted because it was awful!

I am not a C-section momma, and I don't know if this will work with your crib--however, I had some pretty major surgery--no lifting over 5 pounds--when Aggie-ed was barely 2 and I taught him how to crawl in and out of his crib--I pulled the side down--let him get in or out and then pulled it back up. He didn't know how to get out otherwise(at that point). I honestly don't remember how I *taught* him to cooperate. When I was with the kids by myself it was just the only way. Perhaps he understood my desperation!?

I would not say it is a month, but yes you should not lift anything to heavy. My two boys were 18 mons apart, is there a way to make it so he can get out by himself when you want him to ? We had a bed that we turned around (still had three sides) but my oldest was able to get out when he wanted to...my concern was more about him falling out of bed while sleeping then getting out on his own.

I know it will be a challenge.

Well, don't tell my dr., but I went ahead and lifted Natalie out (our then 15 month old, about 25 lbs.) There was no way I was going to go ahead and move her to a toddler bed and we don't have the room for a 2nd toddler bed anyway. :) I did however, for several weeks before the baby came, practice getting her out of the bed and immediately putting her down to walk with me to wherever we were going instead of carrying her. Whenever my husband or someone was here with me the first week, I had them lift her up and down for me, but otherwise, I just had to go ahead and do it. And really, it wasn't that much - just in and out of the crib for naps. The rest of the time, I would sit on the floor or on the couch and let her climb up to me if she needed holding.

Well, I'm not real good with conundrums like this one so (like I had anything do to with it) I decided just to have my first by c-section and the next were v-back. Ya know, so I didn't have to figure tough stuff like this out.

Is it possible to lower one side so that he could crawl out when you wanted him to, and when he's sleeping that would be the side up against the wall? That would have worked with our crib but it was made back in the days of the Israelites. So, I highly doubt that you have one like it.

We do have a crib that lowers on the side that we've borrowed from some friends. We were planning on using it for Levi, but it might work better to put it in Caleb's room for the time being and switch the beds when Caleb is ready for a toddler bed. Levi won't be sleeping in his own bed for a while, anyway.

Thanks for all the advice so far, ladies!!

Ok, first of all...really try not to lift him if you can help it. I ripped open my 3rd C-section (which then got a staph infection) and ended back up in the hospital, doing this very thing. SO, be careful!!
My idea would be this: could you get a step stool that you could help him up on by holding his hand, and then he could do the rest? That way he wouldn't be "on his own" but you wouldn't have to lift him either.
How are you doing? Are ya hanging in there? I am praying! It's too bad you're not the one in Singapore, or I'd have half a mind to hop on a plane and fly over there (it's only 3 hours away!)
Blessings,
Joy

Jenn-
We moved Emily to her big girl bed when she was just 20 months old. I wanted her good a ready once Malachi came. We put the bed and crib in the room...This turned into a crying match where we just took down the crib. She had no problems!!!! We did a routine of a book, a prayer, and her music box. The first couple of nights Ben and I hung out upstairs until she was asleep and after that no problems. We were going to move Malachi to his big boy bed after coming home from the hospital...I feel this would have worked because we were already doing the same routine as we had been doing with Emily. Keep in mind 3 days starts froming a habit!!!! Emily also loved the stool we painted to match her room. Just some thoughts!!!

I would not move him into a toddler bed. I think it brings so much discipline issues and my kid just wasn't ready for it when # 2 came along. Not sure how to handle the whole not lifting thing though ... maybe a 3 step stool ... I've seen them at target. I still have Ryan in his crib and he's 2 1/2. However do what you need to do. To me it was just easier since he was not ready to handle that huge independence and I figure that it would bring up too many discipline issues that neither of us were ready for. Keeping you in prayer!
