Potty Training

It seems that my second child in 2 years is going to drag me kicking and screaming into potty training. My kids pick the most inopportune times to decide they want to potty train. Caleb decided to use the potty full-time the day we went camping with our Life Group and stayed in tents (the bathroom was about 100 yards away). Levi has chosen three days before we're supposed to be on a 24-hour flight and out of our normal routine for 5 weeks to decide he wants to wear underwear. Not great timing.

People who have kids younger than Caleb sometimes ask me for advice on potty training. I always tell them I don't have any because Caleb potty-trained himself. He watched the other kids at Mother's Day Out and then came home telling me he wanted to go on the potty. We did pull-ups for a while, then moved to only at naptime and bedtime, and a couple of months later I realized he was always completely dry when he woke up.

We've been talking about the potty with Levi for a while, but I didn't want to start until after our trip this summer. He decided yesterday that he wanted to wear underwear and was not happy when I put a diaper on him at bedtime. He wants to be like his big brother so desperately.

So far he's doing ok at it. Two accidents, but not too bad. We'll see how it goes over the next couple of days, but I secretly hope he loses interest because I'm not about to let a not-quite-potty-trained child wear underwear on an airplane. That would make for a memorable flight.

Oh, that is bad timing! I hope he changes his mind for your sake. You don't need any more stress on that plane ride.

Oh boy! As if a plane ride like that isn't eventful enough!

You really think that Levi would pick an easy time... HE HE HE.... it would not be fun unless there was a bit of challenge to it... huh... keep us updated and we will miss you.

For a while, we did the diaper under or over the underwear so he could still wear them and feel like a big kid while we "practiced" without all the mess. We did that on our way here with our 12 hour drive just in case, though we stopped every two hours and he stayed dry the entire time! We're a few weeks into Bryan being potty trained and now, at the hospital, he has a diaper on at night still and all hooked up to IVs and REFUSING to use a diaper. Nice timing to get all independent. LOL

I hope he loses interest for a bit longer for you or that he lets you put underwear under or over the diaper to still feel like a big kid without creating a big mess for you. Good luck!

I've been having trouble with Juliana too. My luck, she'll probably do the same thing! Just before our flight to the U.S. Ugh, kids!!!!

Hey Jenn, I've read your post on your broken ankle. I broke my ankle a week ago, and I'm feeling thoroughly distressed. I have a metal plate and a few screws in my ankle. The stay in the hospital was dreary.. and the uncertainty kills me. Can we keep in contact? Because I want to learn from your experience. I never had a surgery before.
