Longing

Mary at Owlhaven had this quote on her blog and I thought it was interesting.

If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery

The comments were really interesting, especially PastorMac's...he won an award for it!

What do you think about the quote? How can we apply it to our everyday lives?

Let me know and then go check out what the others had to say over at Mary's.

Is that quote specifically about raising children? After I read the comments--that's the way I see people applying it.

However, when I first read it--I thought it was saying if you can teach someone about God and the hugeness of who He is--then rest of the Christian walk will make sense.

(I suppose it's kind of a reaction to my legalistic background??)

I didn't comment over at Mary's, but this quote reminds me of "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for life." But it even goes a step further - "Instill in a man the love of fishing and he might feed a bunch of other people as well."

Maybe it's about motivation. If someone is told to do a task, their heart may not be in it. If they are motivated in their heart to do the task, you probably won't have to even tell them.

Okay, that's my stab at it.

Thanks for stopping by She Lives today. Your comment was very encouraging.

As a person who can get lost in the details, this quote spoke to me. I'm all about to-do lists & checking things off. Lately, though, I've come to the realization that this tendency has led me to feel like a failure spiritually. There's no way we can follow the Bible as a to-do list- we lose everytime. And I think that sense of failure & judgement is why many turn away from church & God. But if we change our focus to God's love & perfection and just long for that, that's what will change people's hearts. Thanks for showing me that quote!
